Why is there a blue circle around my Gmail icon or Google account?

Most people who ask this are looking at a ring on the Google profile picture or a ring around the Gmail app icon — not a tracker in Sent. That UI cue is from Google (or Android), not from SentCue. A different blue circle can appear next to rows in the Sent list if an email tracking extension is installed; that case is covered further down.

Blue ring around your Google profile picture

Since August 2026 Google shows a blue gradient ring around the account photo of people with a paid Google One or Google AI plan. It replaced the older red, yellow, green and blue ring. Nothing is wrong with your account, and it does not mean someone is tracking your mail. Sources: 9to5Google, Android Authority.

Blue ring around the Gmail app icon

On Pixel phones (and some Android launchers) the home screen highlights suggested apps with a colored ring that follows your wallpaper colors. You can turn app suggestions off in the home screen settings. Again: not email tracking.

Blue circle next to a message in Sent (tracking extension)

If the circle sits next to emails in your Sent folder on a computer, it almost always comes from an email tracking extension in the browser — not from Gmail itself. Gmail does not draw colored circles to report whether a sent message was opened. In SentCue Email Tracking, blue means an activity signal was detected after Send — not proof a person read the mail.

Blue, gray and orange in Sent

Hover over a blue circle to see when the first and the latest events were detected and how many there were. The same status appears in the extension’s History page, where you can search sent emails, mark them as follow-up needed, and set reminders.

What a blue circle does not prove

Keep in mind. A blue circle means an activity signal was detected; it does not guarantee that a person read the message.

The signal comes from an image being loaded. A mail provider’s image proxy, a corporate security scanner, or you opening your own copy in Sent can load that image too. Automated loads that SentCue can recognize are filtered, but no image-based email tracking tool can confirm that a human finished reading. Treat blue as “this email got attention”, not as a signed read receipt.

Why a circle can stay gray

I see a blue circle but did not install anything

Open chrome://extensions (or the extensions page of Edge, Brave or Opera) and look for an email tracking or sales extension. A work profile or a shared computer may have one installed. Recipients do not see these circles: they are drawn only in the sender’s browser, next to the sender’s own Sent messages.

How to turn the circles off

In SentCue Email Tracking, click the extension icon in the toolbar and switch activity detection off. You can also turn tracking off for a single email in the Gmail compose window before sending. Existing circles stay in your history until you delete it.

What to do when a Sent circle turns blue

If you use tracking on purpose, blue can be a moment to follow up — especially for proposals and client threads. See when to follow up after a proposal and what to write when there is no response. Gmail’s own receipts are different: Gmail read receipt vs activity signals.

Came here for the Google profile / app-icon ring? You are done — no extension required. Came for Sent-folder circles and want the product that draws them: email tracker for Gmail.
