How to see if a Gmail email got attention
You sent something important. The job is to know whether it got attention — so you can follow up — not to collect a legal “opened” stamp. People type “how to see if someone opened your email in Gmail” and “gmail read receipt” for that same job. Personal Gmail has no open log. Workspace can request a read receipt. A Chrome tracker can show a gray or blue circle in Sent: an activity signal, not proof of reading.
Quick answer
- Can Gmail tell you if someone opened your email? No open log on personal @gmail.com. Workspace can request a read receipt if the admin allows it — and the other side still has to return it.
- How do I see if someone opened my email in Gmail? Native receipt (Workspace, steps below) or a Chrome activity signal: gray waits, blue means the tracking image was requested.
- Is that proof they read it? No. Proxies and scanners can load the image. Blocked images stay silent. Opening the thread in Sent on this computer does not turn the circle blue. A phone or another computer still can.
Gray vs blue in Sent
If you use SentCue Email Tracking, the circle next to the Sent row is the product — not a dashboard of “opens.”
- Gray — waiting for a signal after Send (and after Gmail’s Undo window).
- Blue — an activity signal was detected. Use it as a cue to follow up, not as “they finished reading.”
Keep in mind. A blue circle means that an activity signal was detected. It does not guarantee that the recipient read the message. Opening Sent on this computer does not create a blue circle.
Setup: email tracker for Gmail. Circle stays gray? Email tracker not working. Blue ring on the Google profile icon (not SentCue)? Blue circle in Gmail.
How to tell if a Gmail email was read
Those queries usually expect a yes/no. Gmail does not give that on every account:
- Native read receipt — only if Workspace policy + compose request + recipient client cooperation. Many phones and apps never return a receipt.
- Delivery receipt — confirms the server accepted the message, not that a person opened it. Different control when available.
- Activity signal (pixel) — a Chrome extension inserts a tiny image; when a client or Google’s image proxy fetches it after Undo, you see a cue in Sent. Proxies and scanners can create a false cue; blocked images create silence.
How to enable Google Workspace receipts
Read receipt options are controlled by the Workspace administrator, not by each user alone. If your company has disabled them, the menu item will not appear no matter how you open Gmail.
- Sign in to the Workspace google account (not a personal alias) in a browser.
- Open Gmail on the web and start a new message in the compose window.
- Open More options (three dots) → choose Request read receipt if the item is listed.
- Send the message. You get a notification only if the recipient’s client supports the prompt and they confirm — or if their organization auto-returns receipts under policy.
That flow is Google’s feature. SentCue does not add or remove Workspace receipts.
How to send or return a receipt
“How to send a read receipt in Gmail” usually means you are the recipient: another person asked for confirmation that you opened their mail. When the prompt appears, you can send the receipt or decline. Some email clients never show the prompt; some mobile apps skip it. Payment receipts or invoice PDFs attached to a thread are unrelated — those are documents, not Gmail’s receipt setting.
When the native receipt fails
Even with Workspace enabled, receipts fail often: the recipient ignores the prompt, their email client does not support it, they read on a phone that never asks, or they opened a mailing-list copy that never triggers the same confirmation. A confirmed native receipt is still not a courtroom log of attention — it is Google’s receipt flow.
If you need proof for a contract handoff, use a signing or download-ack product. Neither Workspace receipts nor SentCue replace that.
Activity signals when receipts are unavailable
When the compose-window control is missing, people look for a tracker. A Chrome extension can insert a tiny image and show a cue in Sent when a remote fetch happens — including when Google Image Proxy or a scanner loads it. Recipients are not asked to click OK. That is why SentCue labels the result an activity signal, not “opened.” Gray and blue are explained above.
Native receipt vs activity signal
| Gmail / Workspace read receipt | SentCue activity signal | |
|---|---|---|
| Who enables it | Admin policy + compose request | You, in the Chrome extension |
| Recipient prompt | Often yes | No extra prompt from SentCue |
| Works on personal Gmail | Usually no full control | Yes, in Gmail on the web |
| Proof a person read it | Still limited | No — signal only |
Which to use
- Need an official Workspace receipt and your admin allows it — use Google’s request.
- Need a lightweight cue in Sent for one-thread follow-ups, no account, no footer — SentCue Email Tracking.
- Need CRM pipeline analytics or campaign mailing lists — pick a suite; that is a different product class.
Will the recipient know?
Native receipts usually involve a prompt. Pixel tools usually do not. SentCue does not add a tracked-by footer, but HTML inspection or a remote-image warning can still reveal a fetch. Details: privacy-first tracking.
FAQ
Can Gmail tell you if someone opened your email?
No. Personal Gmail has no open log. Workspace can request a read receipt if the admin allows it, and the recipient’s client still has to return that receipt. A Chrome tracker can show an activity signal when a tracking image is requested. That is not proof a person finished reading.
How do I see if someone opened my email in Gmail?
On Workspace, request a read receipt from compose if the menu item is listed. On personal Gmail, add a Chrome email tracker: gray in Sent means waiting, blue means an activity signal. Opening the thread in Sent on this computer does not turn it blue. A phone or another computer still can.
Can you put a read receipt on Gmail?
On Google Workspace, yes if your admin allows Request read receipt in compose. On a personal @gmail.com account that control is usually missing.
How do I enable a read receipt in Gmail?
Sign in to a Workspace account, compose a message, open More options (three dots), and choose Request read receipt if listed. Personal Gmail typically has no equivalent switch.
What does a gray or blue circle in Sent mean?
Gray means SentCue is waiting for a signal. Blue means an activity signal was detected — the tracking image was requested after Gmail’s Undo window. It is a follow-up cue, not a certificate that someone read the mail. Proxies and scanners can create a false blue; blocked images can leave it gray.
Does opening my own Sent email count as a signal?
Opening the message in Sent on this computer does not turn the circle blue. Opening it on a phone or another computer still can.
Use Email Tracking when you want a signal in Sent, not a legal read receipt. Install and pin the extension.
